Das Salettl

A drinking hall at the inn owned by Mathias Späth in municipality of Beiderwies near Passau is on record for the first time in 1884. The official building authority file in 1899 states that the inn premises “especially has a spacious glasshouse built in accordance with the requirements of the modern era, in which all kinds of amusements such as balls, weddings, etc. can be also held in the winter, because the facility can be heated.”

The concession for the operation of the inn is granted, because “the locality of Mariahilf – along the main road Passau-Schärding – is visited as an excursion site by many residents of the city of Passau, and as a result, the Späth inn is frequently used as a stop for refreshments. The mentioned locality is also utilised by tourists during the summer months, and these visitors as well as the residents of Mariahilf are absolutely dependent on an inn”.

Wirtsleute des SalettlThe furnishing of the gazebo is based on original findings (benches), text sources (oven, tables and chairs) and comparative examples (bar furniture). The dance hall in the open-air museum is part of the roadside inn ensemble.

Built in 1881, converted into a paint shop in 1924, removed in 2010, rebuilt in 2012/13 – boarded wood frame construction featuring many windows, pergola and pavilion roof – colour scheme and stencil decoration restored or reconstructed according to findings
